The river splits the city
The original town center sits south of the Arkansas River, and in May 2019 the city recommended evacuations for flood plain neighborhoods, mostly on the south side.
Creeks fill fast
Southtown flooded in 2008, 2015 and May 2022, when damage was put at about $2 million. Residents raised debris in Little Snake Creek after that flood.
Saturated ground
In May 2019 the soil was already soaked from earlier rain, so new rain ran off instead of soaking in. FEMA is also working on new flood plain maps for Tulsa County.

(888) 619-9509 Report rising water nowHow do I know if the house is in a flood plain?
FEMA flood maps show mapped flood zones; the city noted in 2019 that residents can check an address at msc.fema.gov. FEMA is working on map changes for Tulsa County, so check again after updates.
Does homeowners insurance cover river flooding?
Most homeowners policies exclude flood water from outside; flood coverage is a separate policy. Coverage depends on your policy, so check with your own insurer.
Is flood water from a creek really Category 3?
Yes. Water that flows across the ground and into a house carries soil, sewage and chemicals, so it is handled as Category 3 from the start.
What should be photographed before a flood?
Every room, the contents of closets and the garage, flooring, appliances and serial plates. Photos taken before the water arrives make the claim file stronger.
What comes out of the house after flood water?
Porous materials the water touched, such as carpet, pad, insulation and the lower strip of drywall, are removed. Framing and concrete are cleaned, treated and dried to the S500 goal.
High water in the house? Start the flood cleanup.
Flood water is Category 3 from the first minute. The mitigation team removes, treats and dries.
